From August 13 to 14, the equestrian competition of the 17th Yunnan Provincial Games was held at the Kunming Jinhui Equestrian Club. This marks the first time in history that equestrian has been included as an official competitive discipline in the Provincial Games, signifying that this once "niche" sport has now been formally incorporated into Yunnan Province's competitive sports talent development system.
The competition featured two major disciplines – Dressage and Show Jumping – with individual and team events contested across Group A and Group B, awarding a total of 8 gold medals. A total of 37 young riders from 8 prefectures and cities, including Kunming, Honghe, Yuxi, Dali, and Pu'er, took part in the event. As the host, the Kunming team was the only delegation to field entries in all 8 categories, ultimately topping the medal table with 5 golds, 2 silvers, and 3 bronzes. The highlight of the competition came from 14-year-old Fu Zhuolin of the Honghe team, who overcame a severe allergy to horse hair to claim the individual title in the Dressage Group B category, capturing widespread attention.
In recent years, equestrian sports have entered a period of significant growth in China. In addition to Yunnan, provinces including Shandong, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Anhui, and Liaoning have also recently elevated equestrian from a demonstration or invitational event to a full-fledged competitive discipline in their respective Provincial Games. The official inclusion of "equestrian" in the competition regulations of multiple provinces signals that the sport is gradually transitioning from commercial club-based training to the public competitive arena, gaining stable institutional support. The two-way channels for social popularization and competitive advancement are now opening up.
